Collection: My Dog Is Recovering
My Dog Is Recovering

Recovery Is a Protocol, Not a Waiting Game.
Whether your dog has just come home from surgery, is finishing a round of antibiotics for an infection, or is rebuilding after a serious illness or injury, the recovery period is one of the most important and most underutilized windows of opportunity in your dog's health journey.
What you do during this time matters enormously. The right nutritional support can mean the difference between a slow, difficult recovery and one where your dog bounces back stronger than before.
At House of Paws we have walked alongside many pet parents through this exact season, and there are a few things we come back to every single time.
The Most Important Thing Nobody Tells You About Antibiotics
If your dog is on antibiotics, please read this carefully.
Antibiotics do their job by eliminating harmful bacteria. The problem is they do not discriminate. They eliminate beneficial bacteria too, the ones your dog's gut depends on for digestion, immune function, mood regulation, and overall health. A course of antibiotics without probiotic support can leave the gut microbiome significantly depleted, which creates a whole new set of problems once the infection is cleared.
Our recommendation is simple and consistent: give a high quality probiotic either two hours before or two hours after every antibiotic dose. That two hour window on either side gives the probiotic its best chance of surviving and taking hold before the antibiotic clears through the system.
This one step can make a meaningful difference in how your dog feels during treatment and how quickly they rebound afterward. It is one of the first things we tell every pet parent who walks in with a dog on antibiotics, and it is one of the most impactful.
Bone Broth Is Your Dog's Chicken Soup
There is a reason humans reach for chicken soup when they are not feeling well. Warm, nourishing, easy to digest, and deeply comforting. Bone broth is exactly that for dogs.
During recovery, appetite is often reduced and the digestive system is under stress. Bone broth provides easily absorbed nutrients, supports the gut lining, encourages hydration, and makes even a small meal more appealing to a dog who has lost interest in their bowl. It is gentle enough for the most sensitive post-surgery stomach and nourishing enough to support meaningful recovery.
It is almost always the first thing we reach for.
Goat Milk for a Tender Tummy
Recovery often comes with digestive disruption, whether from medications, stress, reduced appetite, or the illness itself. Raw goat milk is naturally rich in probiotics, digestive enzymes, and easily absorbed nutrients that help soothe and rebalance a digestive system that has been through a lot. It is gentle, palatable, and works beautifully alongside a probiotic protocol during recovery.
Manuka Honey for Respiratory Recovery and Wound Healing
If your dog is recovering from kennel cough or a respiratory illness, Manuka honey combined with slippery elm is one of our most effective natural protocols. Manuka honey coats and soothes the throat and respiratory tract, while slippery elm provides additional anti-inflammatory and mucilaginous support that helps calm irritation and support healing from the inside.
Manuka honey is also remarkably effective for wound healing when applied topically. It creates an inhospitable environment for bacteria while actively supporting tissue repair. However not all Manuka honey is created equal. For therapeutic use you want a product with a UMF rating of 10 or higher. The UMF, or Unique Manuka Factor, is the industry standard rating that measures the concentration of the active compounds responsible for its healing properties. Below UMF 10 the therapeutic benefit is significantly reduced.
A Note Before You Shop
You will notice we have not included food in this collection. That is intentional. But food is never more important than during recovery.
A recovering body needs high quality protein to repair tissue, moisture to support organ function and hydration, and easily digestible whole ingredients that do not create additional digestive burden. You cannot supplement away a bad diet. Trying to is like putting a bandaid on diabetes. Every supplement on this page will work harder in a body that is being fed well.
If your dog is recovering and you are not sure what to feed them during this period, please come talk to us. That conversation could significantly change the trajectory of their healing.
Where To Start
Step 1: Start Probiotics Immediately
If your dog is on or has recently been on antibiotics, start a high quality probiotic today. Two hours before or two hours after each dose. Do not wait until the course is finished. The sooner you begin supporting the microbiome the better.
Step 2: Add Bone Broth
Start here if your dog has a reduced appetite, is post-surgery, or is simply not feeling like themselves. Warm, gentle, and nourishing. It is recovery in a bowl.
Step 3: Introduce Goat Milk
Layer this in alongside bone broth to support gut rebalancing and provide additional easily absorbed nutrition during a period when the digestive system needs all the help it can get.
Step 4: Address Specific Recovery Needs
Kennel cough or respiratory recovery: Manuka honey UMF 10 or higher combined with slippery elm. Wound healing: Manuka honey UMF 10 or higher applied topically. Post-surgery gut support: soil based probiotics, slippery elm, and bone broth as your foundation. Post-illness immune rebuilding: functional mushrooms layered in gradually as your dog stabilises.
Step 5: Rebuild Gradually
Recovery is not the time to introduce everything at once. Start with the foundations, observe how your dog responds, and layer in additional support as they stabilise and strengthen. Patience is part of the protocol.
