My Dog Has Tummy Troubles

Zaner's Vet Told Us He Just Had a Sensitive Stomach.
For the first couple of years of Zaner's life, we were at the vet monthly. He was randomly vomiting, uncomfortable, and struggling to keep things consistent. The explanation we were given was simple: Yorkies have sensitive tummies. It was framed as a breed trait, something we would just have to manage.
We did not accept that.
When we switched Zaner from processed food to a freeze dried raw diet, the monthly vet visits stopped. Not reduced. Stopped. His so-called genetic sensitivity disappeared when we removed the thing that was causing it.
What looked like a breed problem was a food problem the whole time.
Why Dogs Get Tummy Trouble
Digestive issues are one of the most common concerns we hear at House of Paws, and one of the most misattributed. Chronic vomiting, loose stools, gurgling stomachs, and inconsistent digestion are rarely just the way your dog is built.
The most common underlying causes are:
Highly processed, high-starch diets that are difficult to digest and disrupt the gut microbiome, low moisture kibble that creates a chronically dehydrated digestive environment, gut imbalance from antibiotics, medications, or poor diet history, food intolerances that trigger low grade inflammation in the digestive tract, and insufficient digestive enzymes that leave food improperly broken down.
If your dog has been labeled as having a sensitive stomach, it is worth asking what they are eating before accepting that as a permanent diagnosis.
Where To Start
Step 1: Upgrade the Diet
This is always step one. A fresh, species-appropriate, moisture-rich diet is easier to digest, gentler on the gut lining, and removes the processed ingredients that are most commonly driving the problem. Freeze dried raw is a great entry point if a full raw diet feels overwhelming.
Step 2: Add Bone Broth
Bone broth is one of the most powerful and accessible gut support tools available. It soothes the digestive tract, supports the gut lining, encourages hydration, and makes any bowl more appealing during a flare up. It is often the first thing we recommend.
Step 3: Introduce Goat Milk
Raw goat milk is naturally rich in probiotics, digestive enzymes, and easily absorbed nutrients. It is gentle enough for sensitive systems and works beautifully alongside a diet transition to help rebalance the gut from the inside out.
Step 4: Support With Probiotics
A high quality probiotic helps rebuild and diversify the gut microbiome, especially important if your dog has been on antibiotics or medications that have disrupted their internal balance.
Step 5: Add Fibre Where Needed
For dogs dealing with inconsistent stools, a gentle fibre source like pumpkin or slippery elm helps regulate digestion and supports a healthy gut environment without harsh intervention.
A Note on "Sensitive Stomachs"
If your dog has been told they just have a sensitive stomach, please come talk to us before accepting that as their story. In our experience, a sensitive stomach is most often a diet that is not working. The gut is remarkably resilient when it is given what it actually needs.
A Note Before You Shop
You will notice we have not included food in this collection. That is intentional. But it does not mean food is not part of the answer, because it almost always is.
Every supplement on this page will work harder in a body that is being fed well. A diverse, fresh diet with as much whole food as your pet parent budget allows is the foundation everything else is built on. You cannot supplement away a bad diet. Trying to is like putting a bandaid on diabetes.
If you are not sure where your dog's diet stands or how to start adding fresh food without overhauling everything at once, come talk to us. That conversation is always free and always worth having.
