Summer Travelling Essentials with the Furry Guys!

If you know anything about Zaner, you know he’s basically a pro at travel days, whether we’re heading to the lake, visiting family, or doing a cross-country trip for pet expos. 🐾

Traveling with your furry family can be so much fun, but a little prep goes a long way to make sure everyone stays happy, safe, and stress-free. So in true Zaner fashion, we put together his top travel tips for your summer adventures:

🚙 1. Pack a Travel Bag Just for Them
Think of it like their suitcase:

  • Food (enough for the entire trip + a little extra)

  • Bottled or filtered water (different water can upset tummies)

  • Bowls (collapsible ones are awesome)

  • Treats (obviously)

  • Supplements or any medication

  • Familiar toys and a blanket that smells like home

  • Waste bags, a brush, and a pet-safe first-aid kit

🛑 2. Map Your Pit Stops
Plan ahead for pet-friendly rest stops or parks along the way. BringFido is a great resource to help you plan where the furry guy friendly spots are along the way!

It's best to take a stretch, sniff, and potty break about every 2–3 hours. Plus, it keeps them (and you) from getting stiff and cranky.

🌡️ 3. Keep It Cool
Cars heat up fast, even with the windows cracked. Always pack a portable fan or cooling mat and never leave your floof alone in the car, even for “just a minute.” Zaner rides with the AC on and a sunshade in the window, plus we travel with a big travel bowl of fresh water that I top up at every stop.

🍖 4. Bring Familiar Food (and Extras)
If your furry family regularly eats the same food, travel isn’t the ideal time to experiment with new foods, it can lead to upset stomachs. Stick with their usual diet, but I always pack a little extra boost for Zaner:

  • Bone broth frozen into cubes

  • Raw goat milk (great for hydration)

  • Some of his fresh favourites

  • A couple of freeze-dried minnows or turkey hearts for a travel treat he loves and knows!

🛏️ 5. Book Pet-Friendly Accommodations
Not all hotels or Airbnbs are created equal. Look for truly pet-friendly places that offer outdoor space or are near a walking trail. Zaner also gets his own blanket in the hotel, it keeps him comfortable and reminds him of home where the texture and scents are familiar. Win-win!

🎒 6. Harness Up
If your floof isn’t used to car rides, a safety harness that clips into the seatbelt can make a huge difference. No loose pets in the car, it’s safer for everyone. (Zaner has his own spot with his car harness and a bed and blanket to chill on.)

🌿 7. Keep Them Calm
Even seasoned travellers like Zaner appreciate a little extra calm on long trips.
We always bring:

  • CBD oil to help with travel anxiety

  • His favourite chew to keep him busy

  • Some of his favourite music or white noise to play if it’s a long haul (yes, Zaner has a road trip playlist — don’t judge).

🐾 Bonus Tip: Always Bring Patience
Traveling with pets means you’re on their time too and that’s part of the joy. Plan for extra stops, a little extra time, and lots of sniffs along the way. It’s not just about the destination, it’s the memories you’ll make on the journey.
